Ungrounded Outlets and the GFCI Solution

Imagine this:  You move into a new home.  You've worked hard all weekend, lugging dressers and couches through narrow doorways and up and down flights of stairs. Your brother-in-law has helped. But let's face it, most of the time he's just been sitting on the ONE couch he helped move in, drinking beer.  Making annoying comments about how much junk you have, and how "that desk is never gonna fit down those stairs." But finally, all the furniture has been placed, all the dishes and clothes have been put away.  You head to your living room to sit down and relax, and maybe crack a beer yourself while you watch some TV. You reach to plug in the TV, only to realize that you have a three-pronged cord, but only a two-prong outlet available nearby.  Your brother-in-law just laughs at you.  What do you do? Why is grounding important? Modern [...]

DORA Recommends Do NOT Regulate Home Inspectors in Colorado

On October 15, 2019, the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) submitted a report to the Colorado General Assembly, summarizing the results of a Sunrise Review Application proposing licensing of home inspectors. The report's conclusion from DORA recommends: Do not regulate home inspectors in Colorado. Statutes in Colorado require that individuals or groups proposing legislation to regulate a profession first submit information to DORA to conduct a sunrise review.  The individual or group must outline whether the unregulated profession harms or endangers the public, and submit justification for the regulation. The sunrise application was submitted by a licensed Colorado real estate broker in conjunction with the Colorado Association of Realtors.  The full report can be read here. Home Inspection Fails of 2019

Although we typically post informative articles or industry updates, we thought we would share some of the fun parts of our job as well. Our inspectors look at hundreds of houses a month, and we run into some of the most bizarre issues you could imagine. Here are some of the best home inspection fails of this year. The ol' spray can plug On a one-year warranty inspection, our inspector, Brett, found a surprise on the roof. A plumbing vent was blocked by something out of place... Common Backyard Pests in Denver (and How to Get Rid of Them)

We're not the only ones who enjoy Colorado's warm and dry climate in the summer. Colorado has its share of bugs. Mosquitoes, bed bugs, Miller moths, and others that itch a ride on people, may be the most annoying, but others are even more destructive. It's a huge problem when these pests decide to camp out around your house, yard and garden. When inspecting your Denver home for problems like termites and mold, knowing which pests to look out for is crucial.
