Frequently Asked Questions
What Is A RESCheck:
REScheck is the name of a software program that the energy department created. The software program is what we use to generate a REScheck report. A REScheck report is used to calculate different ways to comply with the IECC Energy codes. The software uses calculated trade offs to achieve this. In very basic terms, this means that if you do not meet the energy standards in one area, you can make up for by exceeding the standards in another. A REScheck report will outline the trade offs needed to comply.
When Is A RESCheck Used:
When one component far exceeds minimum requirements of the energy code, a builder can reduce specifications on other items.  Examples include a desire to maintain 2×4 framing on above grade walls, larger windows that can’t meet the minimum U-factor requirements, or areas that can’t achieve the minimum insulation requirements without costly foam insulation.  Under scenarios like this, performing a REScheck calculation is a way to show compliance with the IECC while maintaining the desired window or insulation values.
What Systems Are Involved:
A REScheck is what you could call an “envelope only” analysis. The energy code tables take into account all of the systems, but a REScheck can only make trade offs when it comes to the exterior barrier. This includes insulation levels and fenestration (windows and doors). If more flexibility is needed than can be achieved with these categories, you can perform a HERS Rating on the home. This is a similar but much more in-depth way of using trade offs to comply with the energy code. Learn more about our HERS Rating services here.
How To Pass:
A REScheck calculation is based on two things: U-value and the area of the home. Based on the how big the home is, the U-value sum of the entire exterior envelope needs to be below a specific number. If the U-Value sum is higher, then you must find a way to reduce it using the three different factors. Once your U-value sum is below the area calculation, you will comply with Section R402: Building Thermal Envelope of the IECC Energy Code. Keep in mind that you still need to follow the IECC tables for the rest of the major systems.
As IECC codes tighten, it is getting harder and harder to simply follow the energy tables on every project. A REScheck can be a very viable solution to this issue. If done correctly, you can make the building process easier, save money, and design a home the way you envision it.
To make this process even easier, try outsourcing your REScheck with Scott Home Inspection. It is as easy as a couple clicks to start an order and send over the project information. Also check out our article on REScheck for IECC Compliance.
