Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Manual J Report:
Manual J is the name of a standard used for calculating the heat load of a home. Manual D is the standard for duct layout and design. A software program is used to generate a Manual J and D report. The intent of the Manual J report is to determine the load, then equipment is selected via the Manual S requirements to ensure that the equipment is sized properly for the load. The Manual D is then completed the connect ducts to the equipment and size the ducts according to the design requirements for each room/area.
When Is a Manual J-D Used:
Starting with the 2009 IECC code, all mechanical systems installed in new construction homes, or new systems installed in additions, require a Manual J and Manual S be performed. When duct systems are present a Manual D report is also needed. Many municipalities require these reports to be submitted at time of permit application, while other areas require them to be submitted prior to rough framing inspection.
What Systems Are Involved:
The Manual J report requires entry of all the envelope or shell components of the design, such as insulation levels, window specs and door specs. The equipment can be selected generically if not fully chosen yet, or specific equipment can be entered if know, and assuming it meets the load requirements. The Manual D duct design is created based on the layout of the home and room load requirements.
How Long Does it Take to Get the Report:
Typically all reports are completed within a 2-4 day time-frame. If the home is more complex or if multiple systems are installed, it can take an extra day or two. Providing all the required information up front helps to speed up the process. Questions can arise and we’ll email or text you to get answers and keep the project moving.
